Retired Col. Ben Settles of San Antonio, the last commander of Lackland’s Officer Candidate School before its name was changed to Officer Training School, reacts as a memorial is unveiled Sept. 22 "Dedicated to those young Airmen" who graduated 46 years earlier in Lackland’s OCS Class 62-A, from April 3 to Sept. 22, 1961. The memorial, located in the outdoor chapel area at Kenly Avenue and Truemper Street, also includes a plaque from Class 62-A, "To Our Fallen Comrades, Rest Easy, ... from your OCS classmates." Officer Candidate School produced reserve officers from the enlisted corps at Lackland from February 1946 until July 1962. Lackland’s OTS commissioned college graduates with no prior service as well as Airmen who had earned under-graduate degrees until 1993, when it moved to Maxwell AFB, Ala.
